Film tourism in Croatia has flourished in the last decade

Film tourism in Croatia has its roots in their own film studio, which from the 1960s until the 1990s was the largest and most famous studio in Central Europe - Jadran film. It is obvious that only in the past ten years have foreign directors recognized the charms of our coast and country side and decided to shoot some of the most famous series and films of today. Although in a relatively short period of time, the list of films and series made would be too long to list, so we have singled out the most interesting ones!

GAME OF THRONES (2011-2019) Fans of action, drama and adventure have certainly watched one of the most watched series ever - Game of Thrones, filmed in Croatia! The locations where the series was filmed are the well-known Dubrovnik, Split, Trogir and Šibenik. Due to its beauty and historical locations that have retained their authentic appearance to this day, Dubrovnik is considered ideal for shooting popular movies and series. The scenography is original and only needs to be minimally adapted to the story of the series itself, and apart from Dubrovnik, the Game of Thrones series was also filmed in Split at several locations, the most famous being Diocletian's Palace. DIANA (2013) A film story depicting the last two years of the life of English Princess Diana, known as "Lady Di" and the romantic relationship between her and Pakistani surgeon Hasnat Khan. The main role went to actress Naomi Watts, who shot the scenes of the said film in Opatija, "The Old Lady" of the Adriatic. Croatian locations represented Australia, the Mediterranean, Rimini and Bosnia.

MAMMA MIA 2 (2017) The island of Vis for 24 days embodied the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi from the movie Mamma Mia! The island, which has been isolated for nearly half a century and served as a military base, has enchanted producers, directors and actors such as Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and the famous Cher. But not just them! In 2018, Vis was included among the candidates for the European Film Location Award - the choice for the best European film location, and local agencies have introduced excursions to Barjoška Bay, which they now call Mamma Mia Beach.

HITMAN'S WIFE'S BODYGUARD (2021) An action comedy film directed by Patrick Hughes was also shot in our beautiful homeland! Actors who enjoyed Croatia preparing for and starring in the set are Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek and Richard E. The Croatian locations for the film were Italy. Thus, in the film we can see the old street in Vodnjan, the panoramic view from the sea on Rijeka and Rovinj and the Blue Cave on Biševo.

ROBIN HOOD(2018) Thanks to director Otto Bathurst, icon and legend Robin Hood spent some time in Croatia. In this version of the story of Robin Hood, a war-hardened crusader and Maori commander launches a bold rebellion against corrupt English rule. The team shot the film in Dubrovnik, where impressive action scenes were shot, and after Dubrovnik, the scene moved to the small Istrian town of Završje, which has for a moment become the birthplace of Robin Hood.
